Just days after a Wesley College student was shot six times at an off-campus party on Halloween, two men have been arrested for alleged involvement in a shooting that took place near a residence hall at Delaware State University, the Delaware Online News Journal reports. The shooting took place on Monday, November 3. One suspect was arrested on Tuesday while the other surrendered to police on Wednesday.

According to the News Journal story, the two suspects went to the dorm to purchase marijuana from a student. The student allegedly brandished a weapon and was shot when a scuffle ensued. All three people involved in the case need an immediate consultation with an attorney as cases such as these often hinge on one person’s word against the others. Anything the three of them say to police or university officials may be used against them even as they try to explain their innocence in the most rationale and forthright way possible. Law enforcement officers and prosecutors can use the most innocuous words against a suspect if that suspect does not have adequate legal representation. In addition to repercussions in the Delaware justice system, college students must also be acutely aware of the consequences a criminal conviction can have on their academic future.  Universities have their own codes of conduct that have serious consequences if violated and many loans, grants and other forms of financial aid may be unavailable to convicted felons.
